The Red Jacob Cichlid, most commonly referred to in the aquarium hobby as the Eureka Red Peacock or Eureka Red Jake, is a strikingly beautiful freshwater fish. Scientifically classified as Aulonocara jacobfreibergi, "Jake" is shorthand for its species name, which honors the early fish importer Jacob Freiberg. Unlike standard sand-dwelling peacocks, wild Aulonocara jacobfreibergi are unique because they are closely associated with underwater caves and heavy rock formations in Lake Malawi.  

The fiery "Eureka Red" variation is not a hybrid, but rather a line-bred strain carefully selected by breeders over generations to amplify its intense red-orange pigmentation.  

 

• Coloration: Mature males showcase a blazing red-orange torso matched with shimmering blue metallic facial highlights, large flowing fins, and often white trim along the dorsal edge. Females, by contrast, remain a subtle, muted brown or grey.    
• Size: They are medium-sized peacocks, typically growing to about 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm) in length. 
• • Temperament: While peaceful compared to aggressive African Mbuna cichlids, "Jakes" are known as one of the slightly more assertive and territorial peacock species, particularly around preferred caves or during breeding periods.  
  Aquarium Setup & Water Requirements
  Because they naturally inhabit intermediate rocky zones, their tank layout needs a specific approach compared to other peacocks:  
• Substrate & Rockwork: Provide a soft sandy substrate because they actively sift through sand looking for food. Crucially, build stable rock structures that form deep caves and overhangs to mimic their natural territory.  
• Water Chemistry: They thrive in hard, alkaline conditions typical of East African rift lakes. Aim for a pH of 7.8 to 8.6 and a water temperature between 76°F and 82°F (24°C to 28°C).  
• Diet: As omnivores, they readily consume high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes. Supplementing their diet with frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and color-enhancing foods rich in spirulina will help maintain their bright red display.
• Tank Mates: They do best in a community tank with other similarly sized Lake Malawi Peacocks and Haps. Avoid housing them with hyper-aggressive Mbunas.
