The Platinum Butterfly Koi (also known as the Platinum Ogon Butterfly) is a highly prized variety of ornamental koi celebrated for its solid, metallic silver-white coloration and long, flowing fins. Often described by hobbyists as "living art" or "angels in the water," these fish combine the striking, high-reflection sheen of traditional Japanese Platinum Ogon with the graceful, wing-like finnage of butterfly koi.

The Platinum Butterfly Koi is a relatively recent breed, developed in the early 1980s. It is a man-made designer fish created by crossbreeding traditional Japanese Nishikigoi (specifically the metallic-white Platinum Ogon) with long-finned wild carp native to Indonesia. Breeders in both Japan and the United States spent generations refining the variety to maximize its reflective pigment and enhance the elegance of its movements

• Metallic Radiance: Unlike flat white fish, these koi possess high-reflective metallic pigments. Their solid silver-white scales shimmer brightly under sunlight or aquarium lighting.
• Elongated Finnage: They feature heavily elongated pectoral, pelvic, and caudal (tail) fins that drape elegantly as they swim. While standard koi are stockier, butterfly variants tend to have a slightly more slender or shorter body proportion.
• True Distinction: As noted by enthusiasts in discussions on Reddit, people occasionally mistake them for albino koi; however, True Platinum Butterfly Koi have normal dark eyes and metallic scales, rather than the reddish eyes typical of albinism.
• High Visibility for Flaws: Because they are a solid, patternless color, any physical blemishes, scale asymmetries, or fin damage are highly visible. High-quality specimens require a completely unblemished head and body.
