The Black Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a striking, captive-bred color morph of the standard freshwater angelfish. Renowned for their tall, arrow-like profiles and elegant, flowing fins, these South American cichlids are a dramatic centerpiece choice for home aquariums.
Aquarium Requirements
Because of their unique body shape—growing up to 6 inches (15 cm) long and 8 inches (20 cm) tall—their environment requires significant vertical space.
Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is required for a single adult, though a 55-gallon tank or larger is highly recommended for keeping a group or breeding pairs to prevent fin damage from crowding.
Water Parameters: They thrive in warm, stable water between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C), with a preferred pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
Aquascaping: They prefer heavily planted tanks containing driftwood and smooth rocks, which mimic their native slow-moving Amazon River habitat.
