The Cobalt Blue Dwarf Gourami (Trichogaster lalius) is a striking, captive-bred color variant of the standard Dwarf Gourami. Highly prized for its intense, metallic electric-blue coloration, it features subtle red or orange vertical striping along its sides and distinctive, touch-sensitive pelvic feelers. Growing to a manageable adult size of 2 to 3 inches (5–7 cm), it makes an excellent, peaceful centerpiece fish for small to medium-sized community aquariums.
Tank Setup & Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons (approx. 40–50 liters) is the bare minimum for a single male or a pair, though a larger tank is always preferred to manage waste and potential territorial behavior.
  • Water Parameters: They thrive best in stable, tropical parameters with a temperature of 74°F–82°F (24°C–28°C), a pH of 6.0–7.5, and moderate water hardness.
  • Filtration & Flow: They naturally inhabit slow-moving or stagnant waters in South Asia. Keep the filter water flow gentle or weak so they do not exhaust themselves swimming against harsh currents.
  • Aquarium Decor: Provide a heavily planted tank with plenty of hiding spots. Utilizing floating plants (like frogbit or hornwort) helps mimic their natural environment. A dark substrate is highly recommended as it visually contrasts and enhances their brilliant blue coats.
  • Surface Access: As labyrinth fish, they possess a specialized organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly from the surface. Always ensure there is open space and fresh air available between the water line and the aquarium lid.
  • Diet & Temperament
    • Feeding: They are undemanding omnivores. High-quality floating flakes or micro-pellets should serve as their daily staple. Complement this with frozen or live treats like bloodworms and brine shrimp to boost their immune system and intensify their colors.
    • Compatibility: They are generally shy and peaceful community fish. Great tankmates include small, non-aggressive species like tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and peaceful community shrimp.
    • Conspecific Aggression: Males are fiercely territorial toward other male dwarf gouramis. It is highly advised to keep only a single male per aquarium as a centerpiece, unless you have a very large, densely planted setup to safely accommodate more.
