Product Details

The male lyretail guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a highly popular, vibrant freshwater aquarium fish famous for its distinctive lyre-shaped tail fin. It is an exceptionally hardy, peaceful, and active species, making it a perfect choice for beginner aquarists. Unlike females, males display intense, diverse coloration patterns—ranging from neon blues and greens to rich reds and yellows—acting almost like a unique fingerprint for each individual fish.
Physical Characteristics & Identification
  • The Lyretail: The defining feature is the tail fin layout, where the upper and lower rays extend outwards further than the center, forming a dual-pointed, fork-like appearance resembling a traditional musical lyre.
  • Size: Males are noticeably smaller than females, typically growing to 1.2 to 2.5 inches (3 to 6 cm) in length.
  • Sexing: Aside from brighter colors and longer fins, males possess a gonopodium—a modified, long, thin pointy anal fin used for reproduction.

    Tank Setup & Behavior
    • Environment: Provide a well-planted aquarium utilizing live flora like Java moss or hornwort, which gives them security and helps maintain pristine water conditions.
    • Aquarium Lid Required: Lyretail guppies are active swimmers across all levels of the water column and are known jumpers; a secure tight-fitting lid or canopy is highly recommended.
    • Filtration: Use a gentle filtration option like a sponge filter or a baffled hang-on-back filter. Strong, turbulent currents can easily exhaust their delicate, elongated fins.
    • Tank Mates: Keep them with peaceful community fish (e.g., neon tetras, corydoras, or ghost shrimp). Strictly avoid fin-nipping species like Tiger Barbs, which will shred the guppy's trailing tail extensions.
    • Stocking Ratios: If keeping a mixed-sex tank, maintain a strict ratio of 2–3 females for every 1 male. This distributes the male's constant mating drive and prevents individual females from suffering lethal stress.
