Moderate care difficulty. Requires a spacious aquarium with a sandy substrate and plenty of rocks or driftwood to create hiding spots and territorial boundaries.
Omnivorous and opportunistic. They should be fed a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
Territorial and can be aggressive, especially during breeding. Best kept with other large, robust Central or South American cichlids or in a species-only setup.
Thrives in clean, well-filtered freshwater with moderate flow.
