GloFish Tetras are popular, genetically modified aquarium fish known for their brilliant, neon fluorescent colors. They are selectively bred from standard Black Skirt Tetras (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) and Pristella Tetras, inheriting their glowing traits from jellyfish and coral genes. Their colors include trademarked shades like Electric Green, Sunburst Orange, Cosmic Blue, Galactic Purple, Starfire Red, and Moonrise Pink.
Quick Care Overview
Tank Size: Minimum 15 to 20 gallons for a proper school.
Water Temperature:21° to 26° (Tropical).
Water pH:6.5 to 7.5 (Slightly acidic to neutral).
Lifespan:3 to 5 years with proper care.
Lighting: Standard white LEDs make them look bright, but blue LED "actinic" lighting causes them to actively fluoresce in the dark.
Tank Setup & Behavior
Schooling Nature: Glo Tetras are social, schooling fish. You must keep them in groups of at least 5 to 6 to prevent stress and lower aggression. You can mix and match different GloFish colors to form a single school.
Environment: They prefer a dark substrate to make their colors pop, coupled with plenty of live or artificial plants for hiding spots and open swimming areas in the middle of the tank.
Diet: As omnivores, they are not picky. They thrive on high-quality tropical flakes, pellets, and occasional frozen treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
Tank Mates: Keep them with other peaceful, fast-moving community fish (like Danios, Corydoras, or other Tetras).
