Product Details
Size 5 cm
Dimidiochromis compressiceps, widely known as the Malawi Eyebiter, is a highly specialized predatory haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe, and the upper Shire River in East Africa. It is famous for its heavily compressed, javelin-like body profile and its unique ambush hunting tactics.

🐟 Overview & Appearance
  • Size: Adult males can reach up to 23 to 30 cm (9 to 12 inches) in length, while females stay slightly smaller.  Morphology: The body is highly compressed laterally (narrow from side to side) with a long, pointed head. This unique shape provides camouflage, allowing the fish to look like a thin leaf or plant blade to unsuspecting prey.
    • Coloration: Sexes are highly dimorphic. Females and juveniles remain a modest silver-white with a dark horizontal stripe. Sexually mature males transform into stunning, vibrant metallic blue, teal, and green with fiery red or orange accents on their fins.

    • 🌿 Behavior & The "Eyebiter" Myth

  • In its natural habitat, D. compressiceps is a specialized piscivore. It typically hunts by floating in a head-down position within dense beds of Vallisneria reeds, waiting to lunge and swallow small fish tail-first. ]
Its menacing common name, "Eyebiter," stems from observations that it will attack the eyes of smaller fish when confined in tight, resource-scarce environments. However, in a spacious aquarium where tankmates are appropriately sized, this behavior is rarely if ever observed, and they generally ignore fish they cannot swallow.

  • 🐠 Aquarium Care Requirements
If you are planning to keep a Malawi Eyebiter, it demands a carefully planned setup:
Aquascaping Sandy substrate with open swimming space, sparse rocks, and patches of Vallisneria plants.
Diet High-protein foods. Feed high-quality cichlid pellets, krill, Mysis shrimp, or chopped seafood. Avoid live feeder fish due to parasite risks.
Stocking & Compatibility Keep one male per tank alongside a harem of 2 to 3 females to manage breeding aggression. Only house them with other large, robust Malawi "Haps" (like Nimbochromis or Cyrtocara) that are at least 5–6 inches long. Avoid small fish or hyperactive Mbuna cichlids.
    Parameter Requirement
Tank Size Minimum 100 to 125 gallons (5 to 6 feet in length).
    Water Chemistry Hard, alkaline water. pH: 7.5 – 8.8 | Temperature: 22°C – 28°C (72°F – 82°F).
