Blue shark pangasius

The "blue shark pangasius"—most commonly known as the Iridescent Shark Catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) or Blue Stripe Pangasius—is not a true shark at all. It is a highly active, fast-growing species of freshwater catfish native to the massive river systems of Southeast Asia.

Because of its high, triangular dorsal fin and sleek, metallic silver-blue body, it heavily resembles a shark when swimming.

Massive Size: While sold as cute 2-to-3-inch juveniles in pet stores, they are not suited for standard home aquariums. They grow incredibly fast and can reach up to 4 feet (120 cm) in length and weigh over 90 pounds.
Skittish Nature: They have very poor eyesight and rely on sensitive whiskers (barbels) to navigate. Because of this, they are extremely nervous and prone to dashing blindly into tank glass when startled, which can severely injure them.
- In the wild, they live in large groups (shoals). Keeping a single pangasius in a tank causes extreme stress and erratic behavior.
- Commercial Importance: Outside of the pet trade, this fish is one of the most heavily farmed species in the world (predominantly in Vietnam) and is widely sold in supermarkets under names like Swai, Basa, Panga, or Cream Dory.

If kept as a pet, this fish requires an enormous setup, often graduating from a giant tank to a custom indoor pond.
- Tank Size: Absolute minimum of 300 gallons for juveniles; large public aquariums or massive indoor ponds are preferred for adults.
- Diet: Completely omnivorous. They easily eat flakes and sinking pellets when small, moving to larger catfish pellets, frozen meaty foods, and vegetables as they grow.
- Tank Mates: They are generally peaceful but will swallow any fish small enough to fit in their mouths. They should only be kept with large, robust, moderately aggressive tank mates like cichlids, large plecos, or adult silver dollars.
