The silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus), also widely known as the Java barb or Java carp, is a highly important freshwater fish species belonging to the minnow and carp family, Cyprinidae. It is native to Southeast Asia but has been widely introduced across the continent due to its massive value in commercial aquaculture.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: They feature a strongly compressed, deep body with an elevated and arched back. Fresh specimens are primarily a striking silvery-white, occasionally exhibiting a soft golden sheen.
  • Fins: Their dorsal and caudal (tail) fins range from gray to gray-yellow, while the anal and pelvic fins often sport a light orange tint with reddish tips.
  • Size: They generally grow up to 25–40 cm in length, though exceptional wild specimens can reach larger sizes.
  • Aquaculture: The silver barb is one of the most heavily farmed species in Southeast Asian pond aquaculture. It grows rapidly and effectively utilizes low-cost, plant-based feeds.
  • Culinary Use: It is a staple food fish across Thailand (Pla Taphiat), Vietnam (Mè Vinh), Indonesia (Tawes), and Bangladesh. It is frequently prepared in traditional village outdoor curries, fried whole, or fermented.
