Spider root (more commonly known in the hobby as Spider Wood) is one of the most popular driftwood types used in aquascaping. Harvested from the root crowns of Azalea or Rhododendron shrubs, it is celebrated for its intricate, winding branches that add incredible depth and texture to a freshwater fish tank.

Key Features of Spider Wood
  • Highly Branched: Its thin, winding "fingers" are perfect for securing epiphytic plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and various mosses.
  • Low Tannins: Unlike darker woods (like Mopani or Malaysian Driftwood), Spider Wood releases very few tannins, meaning it won't severely tint your aquarium water brown.
  • Lightweight: It is very buoyant when dry and takes some time to sink fully on its own.

Essential Prep Guide (Before Putting it in Your Tank)
If you place dry spider root straight into your aquarium, it will float, and it will likely grow a thick layer of white slime. Follow these steps to prepare it properly:
  1. Boil or Soak (To Sink It): Because it is lightweight, you must waterlog the wood. Boil the piece for 1 to 2 hours to sterilize it and help it absorb water faster. If it is too large to boil, submerge it in a bucket of water for 1 to 2 weeks.
  2. Weigh It Down: Even after soaking, stubborn pieces may still float. You can glue the wood to a heavy flat rock using aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate superglue (gel forms work best), or simply weigh it down with a heavy stone inside the tank until it stays down permanently.
  3. Expect the "White Bio-Film Slime": Within a few days of submersion, your spider root will almost certainly develop a fuzzy, white, or translucent gel-like slime. Do not panic. This is a completely harmless fungus feeding on leftover sugars in the wood.
  4. Popular Product Options
    • Spiderwood by Buce Plant: Great for picking out varying standard sizes to craft low-profile root networks or towering vertical systems.
    • Lifegard Aquatics Spider Wood / Cuckoo Root: Known for offering larger, high-grade specimen pieces ranging up to 23 inches for significant focal hardscapes.
