Dragon Stone (also commonly known as Ohko Stone in Japan) is one of the most popular natural rocks used in aquascaping, terrariums, and paludariums. It is named for its unique, highly textured surface that mimics the rippled, hardened scales of a mythical dragon.
Key Characteristics & Benefits
  • Completely Inert: Authentic Dragon Stone is made of a hardened, petrified clay. It is pH neutral and will not alter the water chemistry, GH, or TDS of your aquarium, making it perfectly safe for sensitive dwarf shrimp and soft-water fish.
  • Lightweight & Brittle: It is much lighter than standard aquarium rocks like Seiryu stone. Because it is a clay-based rock, it is relatively soft and brittle. You can easily break larger pieces into smaller detailed fragments using a hammer and chisel.
  • Rich Color Palette: When dry, it features earthy tones of yellow, beige, and light brown. Once submerged or wet, the coloration deepens beautifully into rich golds, deep browns, and subtle reds.
  • Natural Planting Pockets: The deep grooves, holes, and honeycomb cavities are perfect for anchoring epiphytic plants like Anubias, Bucephalandra, and various aquatic mosses. These holes also provide natural hiding spots for small fish and shrimp fry.
  • How to Prepare It for an Aquarium
Because it originates from dried clay riverbeds, Dragon Stone arrives packed with compressed mud and dirt trapped inside its deep crevices. Do not place it directly into your tank. Follow these preparation steps:
    1. Soak the Rock: Submerge the stone in a bucket of water for 24 to 48 hours to soften the packed clay hiding inside the holes.
    2. Scrub & Clean: Use a stiff brush, toothbrush, or a small screwdriver/skewer to poke out the loosened mud from the cavities.
    3. Final Rinse: Blast the rock with a hose or high-pressure spray until the water runs clear.
