Ceratophyllum submersum, commonly known as soft hornwort or tropical hornwort, is a species of submerged, rootless, free-floating perennial aquatic plants.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: It has a bright green, feathery look with soft stems. Its leaves fork 3 to 4 times, ending in 6 to 8 threadlike tips.
  • Growth Habitat: Found globally across Europe, Central Asia, Africa, and parts of North America (such as Florida). It thrives in quiet, shallow, nutrient-rich (eutrophic) freshwater ponds, ditches, and still waters.
  • Ecological Benefits: It acts as a natural water purifier by absorbing excess nutrients like ammonium (NHâ‚„) and nitrate (NO₃), which helps oxygenate the water and aggressively suppress algae growth. It also provides excellent protective cover for small fish and fry.
Soft Hornwort vs. Rigid Hornwort
It is frequently confused with its highly common relative, Ceratophyllum demersum (rigid hornwort/coontail). They can be distinguished by these features:
Feature Ceratophyllum submersum (Soft Hornwort) Ceratophyllum demersum (Rigid Hornwort)
Leaf Forking Leaves divide 3 to 4 times (forming 8 to 16 fine segments) Leaves divide only 1 to 2 times
Texture Soft, light green, and quite brittle to the touch Darker green, rigid, and distinctly stiff
Fruit Fruit lacks spines at the base Fruit features two distinct spines at the base
Uses in Aquariums and Ponds
While less common in the commercial trade than rigid hornwort, soft hornwort is highly valued by aquarists and pond keepers. It requires very low maintenance, handles low to moderate lighting well, and can simply be left floating in the water column where it propagates easily by vegetative fragmentation (breaking into smaller growing pieces).
