The Livingston's Cichlid (Nimbochromis livingstonii), locally known as the "Kalingono" or "Sleeper Fish," is a large, predatory African cichlid native to Lake Malawi. It is globally famous in the aquarium hobby for its fascinating hunting strategy called thanatosis (death feigning), where it intentionally plays dead on the aquarium floor to ambush unsuspecting prey. Unlike active pursuit predators, the Livingstonii drops to the aquarium substrate, rolls partly or completely onto its side, and remains perfectly motionless. Its highly specialized brown, white, and yellow blotched pattern resembles a rotting fish carcass. When smaller, curious fish approach to investigate or scavenge the "corpse," the Livingstonii suddenly erupts into motion, snapping up the prey with its large mouth.  

 

• Size: They are substantial fish, with dominant males reaching up to 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) and females staying slightly smaller at around 8 inches (20 cm).  
• Coloration: Juveniles and females retain a highly effective camouflage pattern of irregular dark brown and cream-colored blotches. As males mature and get ready to breed, they "color up" beautifully, transforming into brilliant shades of metallic blue, green, and gold, often completely masking their camouflage pattern.

  Because of their predatory nature and large size, keeping a Livingston's Cichlid requires intermediate to advanced aquarium experience:

  Water Temperature	75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
  Water pH	Hard and alkaline: 7.5 to 8.8.
  Diet	Strictly carnivorous. High-quality cichlid pellets supplemented with meaty frozen or fresh foods like krill, shrimp, and earthworms. Avoid feeding them small community fish unless intended as feeder food.
