Aqua Medic NP Biograin

Aqua Medic NP Biograin is a biological pellet filter media used in marine aquariums to reduce nitrate (NO₃) and phosphate (PO₄) through bacterial nutrient consumption.

Key specs

  • Type: Biodegradable bacterial pellet media
  • Use: Marine (saltwater) aquariums only
  • Application: Fluidized bed / pellet reactor (e.g. Multi Reactor systems)
  • Function: Biological reduction of nitrate & phosphate
  • Method: Bacteria consume nutrients → exported via protein skimming

What it is for

  • Reducing nitrate and phosphate levels naturally
  • Controlling algae growth by lowering nutrients
  • Creating a biological nutrient export system
  • Producing bacterial biomass that can feed corals and filter feeders

Who it is for

  • Reef aquarium hobbyists with nutrient (NO₃ / PO₄) issues
  • Medium to advanced marine tank keepers
  • Users running protein skimmers and reactors
  • SPS/LPS coral systems needing ultra-clean water control

How to use (instructions)

  • Use only in a fluidized pellet reactor (not filter bags or loose in tank)
  • Fill reactor with NP Biograin
  • Start flow so pellets are in gentle continuous tumbling motion
  • Ensure strong protein skimmer is running at all times
  • Allow 2–6 weeks break-in period for bacteria to develop
  • Avoid letting pellets clump together (maintain constant movement)

 Dosage

  • Starting dose: ~50 ml per 100 liters of aquarium water
  • Normal operating dose: up to 100–200 ml per 100 liters
  • Increase slowly every 1–2 weeks based on nitrate/phosphate readings
  • Do not dose full amount immediately (risk of bacterial bloom)

Important notes

  • Requires efficient protein skimming (essential)
  • Can cause bacterial bloom or oxygen drop if overdosed
  • Only for marine aquariums (not freshwater)
  • Reactor flow must be gentle tumbling, not aggressive boiling
  • Always increase dose gradually over time
