Aqua Medic Carbolit

Aqua Medic Carbolit is a high-efficiency activated carbon filter media in pellet form used in aquarium filtration to clean and polish water in both freshwater and marine systems.

Key specs

  • Type: Activated carbon (pellet media)
  • Form: Granules / pellets (1.5 mm or 4 mm versions)
  • Use: Freshwater & saltwater aquariums
  • Function: Chemical filtration (adsorption)
  • Purpose: Removes color, toxins, and impurities from water

What it does

  • Makes aquarium water crystal clear
  • Removes yellowing compounds (tannins, phenols)
  • Eliminates medication residues after treatment
  • Reduces organic pollutants and discoloration
  • Improves overall water clarity and quality

How to use

  • Rinse thoroughly with RO or aquarium water before use
  • Place in:
    • Filter bag inside a canister filter, or
    • Sump chamber with good flow, or
    • Dedicated media reactor (best performance)
  • Ensure water passes through the media, not around it
  • Replace regularly for best results

Recommended dosage

  • General guideline:
    • ~100–250 ml per 100 liters of water (depending on water condition and load)
  • Heavy use (after medication or yellow water):
    • Up to 250–500 ml per 100 liters temporarily
  • Replacement cycle:
    • Every 3–6 weeks (or when water clarity decreases)
  • Always adjust based on tank bioload and water tests

Important notes

  • Can lower water nutrients quickly → don’t overuse in reef tanks
  • Must be rinsed to remove carbon dust before use
  • Works best with moderate water flow (not stagnant, not too fast)
  • Not a permanent filter — it is a consumable media
  • In reef tanks, avoid sudden large changes (can stress corals)

Who it’s for

  • Reef and freshwater aquariums needing clear water
  • Tanks recovering from medication treatment
  • Systems with yellow or cloudy water
  • Hobbyists wanting polished, crystal-clear water quality

Not ideal for

  • Tanks with very low nutrients (ULNS reef systems) if overused
  • Users who don’t rinse or replace regularly
  • Systems relying only on biological filtration
